Mulled Apple Cider

Some spices can turn plain cider or apple juice into a warm winter treat

You will fill your house with a wonderful smell as you simmer this mix of juice and spices to make a batch of mulled apple cider.

Though usually a traditional drink over the Christmas holidays, a warm mug of mulled cider is a welcome treat all through the cold winter months

The term "mulled" just means heated, with added spices. It's a technique used for wine as well as cider. Traditionally, the spiced used are some combination of allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves.

These recipes can be made with either apple juice or actual cider (either traditional cider, or the non-alcoholic variety).

Here is a basic mulled cider recipe that would suit your next family gathering or party. Feel free to experiment with the spice combination to get the perfect flavour.

Mulled Cider Recipe

  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of whole allspice
  • 1 teaspoon of whole cloves
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 3- inch stick cinnamon, broken up
  • 2 quarts of apple juice

Stir everything together in a saucepan and heat until just simmering. Let steep for at least 20 minutes or up to half an hour. Strain out the spices and serve into warmed mugs. This recipe will serve around 8 people.

Hint: If you place the whole spices in a small cheesecloth bag, it will be much easier to take them out before serving.
